Introducing the Woke Edu Bursary and Mentorship Program

NBCC Edmonton is excited to announce that we have established our own bursary program! The Woke Edu Bursary and Mentorship Program (Woke Edu = Woken Education) aims to help youth in the Black community realize self-sufficiency through post-secondary education and skills development. This program supports young Black Canadians in their post-secondary studies with both monetary awards and community mentorship.

Each year, bursaries of $1000 (renewable up to four years) will be given to Black students ages 17-25 who demonstrate involvement or readiness to become involved in their local Black community, as well as financial need. Funds may be used towards such costs as tuition, books, and living expenses.

In addition to receiving the financial award, each recipient will be enrolled in our mentorship program and paired with a mentor from the Black community. We believe that mentorship can fill in some key gaps in the education system and help students overcome barriers often faced by Black students (including personal, social, academic, and institutional barriers). Mentors can help students navigate life both on and off campus, and can offer tangible strategies and resources that are specific to Black students and the unique challenges that they face.

For the 2021/2022 academic year, there are five bursaries available. To be considered for a bursary, students must meet the criteria set out by the Woke Edu Bursary Committee. Criteria include being a Black Canadian, being enrolled as a full-time post-secondary student, demonstrating involvement in the Black community, as well as other requirements. Although these bursaries are available to the larger Black community in the Edmonton area, preference will be given to current NBCC members or family members who are entering their first year of post-secondary studies.

The application deadline for the 2021/2022 school year is [THURSDAY, JULY 15TH, 2021 AT 11:59 PM].
