NBCC Excellence Award 2024 

For over 30 years, the National Black Coalition (NBCC) has proudly presented the Excellence Award, recognizing and honouring the outstanding achievements of members within our Black community across various fields and endeavours as a fitting closure to Black History Month. This year, we received many nominations, each representing a shining example of dedication, resilience, and service.

The Excellence Award was possible thanks to our community members’ incredible support and contributions. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who sent in their nominations, sharing stories of excellence, dedication, and resilience. Special appreciation goes to our inspirational keynote speaker, Sterling Scott, whose moving speech on representing Edmonton with pride and resilience left a lasting impact on all attendees. , from earning a Golden Buzzer on Canada’s Got Talent 2024 to receiving the prestigious NBCC 2014 Fil Fraser Award, Sterling’s journey served as a pillar of hope and inspiration for us all, and he received a standing ovation.

MC Mr. Andrew Parker’s charismatic presence entertained us throughout the evening, while the incredibly talented saxophonist Mr. Septimus Alexander serenaded us with his soulful melodies.

The event was graced by the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including City Councillors Ms. Keren Tang and Mr. Andrew Knack, MLAs David Shepherd and Brooks Arcand-Paul, Chief Dale McFee from the Edmonton Police Service, and Mr. Levar Saul from TD Bank Group, whose generous support as the event’s sponsor highlights their commitment to community engagement.

NBCC Excellence Award 2024 Winners

Mary Burlin Award

Individuals & groups have delivered impactful programs & services to the Black Community.

  1. Mr. Kemoh B Mansaray: A community leader, educator, and advocate, Mr. Mansaray has dedicated himself to transforming services for immigrant and refugee families in our community. His impact is remarkable, from serving on boards to promoting empowerment and systemic change.
  2. Dr. Christine Nsaliwa and the Edmonton Immigration Services Association. As the Executive Director of the Edmonton Immigration Services Association (EISA), Dr. Nsaliwa has expanded settlement services for newcomers and immigrants, showcasing exemplary leadership in supporting vulnerable populations.

Dr. John Akabutu Award

For Resilience Against Challenging Odds.

  1. Ms. Medgine Mathurin: Despite facing a diagnosis of Lupus, Ms. Mathurin has become a fierce advocate for patients with chronic illnesses, advocating for comprehensive care and support for marginalized women navigating their health journey.

Fil Fraser Award

Individuals or groups who have done outstanding work in literary, performing and visual Arts

  • Ms. Macha Abdallah: A multi-disciplinary artist, Macha Abdallah’s visual art has left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape, from collaborative public art projects to exhibitions at prestigious galleries.
  • Mr. Tope Akindele: With a profound artistic journey spanning over a decade, Tope Akindele’s photography captures life’s extraordinary moments and memories, while his commitment to volunteerism enriches communities throughout Alberta.

Clarence “Big” Miller Award

To individuals and groups in the Black Community who have demonstrated excellence in vocal or instrumental performance, music composition, or instruction.

  1. Ms. Danielle Monique George: Leading the Trincan Steel Orchestra and hosting her podcast, Danielle Monique George’s dedication to preserving Caribbean culture through music is inspiring and impactful.
  2. Mr. Oshane Samuels: A multi-skilled musician and music coordinator, Oshane Samuels’ commitment to community betterment through musical performance and instruction shines through his work.

Youth (NBCC) Award

To young black individuals (aged 24 –35 years or younger) or groups who have demonstrated academic excellence and/or delivered exceptional programs and services in any area of the Black Community or society at large.

  1. Mr. Christian Fotang: As President of the University of Alberta Student Union, Christian Fotang’s advocacy for affordable and accessible post-secondary education paves the way for future generations.

Rosalind Smith Award Business

This award recognizes exceptional and prolonged service from individuals or groups in the Black Community who own and run a business.

  1. Mr. Eric Mason: With over 32 years of culinary expertise, Eric Mason’s Genius Catering brings bold and spicy flavours of Jamaican cuisine to countless events, creating memorable experiences through his culinary artistry.
  2. Mr. Emmanuel Alade: As the principal owner of the City Law Office, Mr. Alade’s commitment to professionalism and community leadership in providing legal services is truly commendable.

Rosalind Smith Award Professional

Exceptional and prolonged service from individuals or groups from the Black Community working in any profession.

  • Mr. Emerson Hull: A Journeyman Electrician and mentor, Mr. Hull’s impact on youth in the electrical engineering trades profession is immeasurable, showcasing dedication to meaningful career opportunities.
  • Dr. Andre McDonald: A leader in thermal spraying and heat transfer, Dr. McDonald’s mentorship and contributions to research and education shape the future of STEM fields, particularly for black youth.

Noel Chen Trade Scholarship Award

This award is for individuals who are attending a college or vocational training program in the trades or who are registered as Alberta apprentices in a trade.

  • Mr. Justin Perry: Justin Perry, who is completing his Electrician program, is committed to his trade and community involvement with Hearts for Hope, which reflects his dedication to personal growth and social responsibility.
  • Mr. Shawn Henry: Founder of “Let’s Talk About It” and a dedicated welding apprentice, Shawn Henry’s advocacy for mental health and community engagement showcases his commitment to holistic well-being.

Each recipient embodies the spirit of excellence and inspires us all. Their dedication to making a difference in our community is truly commendable.

As we celebrate the achievements of these remarkable individuals and groups, let us be inspired to embrace excellence in all we do, uplift and empower those around us, and work together towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all. Together, we can create positive change, one step at a time.
