Dear National Black Coalition of Canadian Society,

We will be providing a mentorship program for Black Youths in Alberta. The University of Alberta Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program seeks to socially and economically empower Black youths to contribute meaningfully to the Canadian Society.

The program is an interdisciplinary program. The program was offered to 34 youths in 2020 and was a tremendous success. We are inviting youths in Grade 10 and 11from high schools in Edmonton and surrounding areas to apply for the program. Youths will attend a mentorship program five days per week from July to August 2021. They will also have follow-up workshops 3 hours per month on weekends from September to December 2021.

The program involves working on a project under the supervision of a mentor, attending workshops, attending conversation cafes, and shadowing professionals.

Youth will receive $700 as compensation for participating in the summer program.

Students can apply for the program on this site

Deadline to apply is April 15, 2021.

New Project Coordinator

We have now recruited a new project coordinator for the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program.
Dr. Myra Kandemiri is the new Project Coordinator for the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program (BYMLP) in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta. She has a PhD in Environmental Education from the University of Edinburgh where she worked for 4 years as a Lecturer in Program Evaluation at master’s level. During that time she was an active member of the United Kingdom Evaluation Society (UKES), serving as Scotland’s representative on the National Council.

Working with Partners In Evaluation, a Scotland-based evaluation consultancy, Dr. Myra Kandemiri completed several high level evaluation projects for external bodies. She reprised both roles in Canada, serving as the BC/Yukon Representative on the Canadian Evaluation Society (CES) National Council and working as an Evaluation Consultant with Intelligence Flows. Prior to joining the Faculty of Nursing, Dr. Kandemiri held course instructor roles at MacEwan University, Lakeland College and Norquest College.

A registered teacher in Alberta, she serves on the M E LaZerte High School Anti-Racism Committee and within that supports students accessing the Black Canadian Women (BCW) Black Students Empowerment Program for High Schools.

Thank you,
Bukola Salami
